Both schools represented at All-State Festival
Pella Christian High School’s Large Group Speech team earned top marks at the IHSSA’s State Speech competition held at Linn-Mar High School on February 8.
Three events earned straight ones and one was nominated with Outstanding Performers, qualifiying them for recognition at the All-State Festival this past Saturday, February 22, 2014 on the campus of Iowa State University.
PC’s Readers Theatre performance of I Never Saw Another Butterfly qualified for the state wide honor. These students represent 35 Readers Theatre teams from across the state of Iowa, selected out of over 200 teams originally entered in the IHSSA Large Group events.
All-State Performers included in the Readers Theatre event are Courtney Griggs, Breanna Terpstra, Jenna Van Der Pol, Kara Zondervan, Anna Burg, Karla De Bruin, Emmalyne Farwell, and Jalayna Morgan. This is the third time in four years a Readers Theatre team from PC has been nominated for All-State.
Pella Christian also received straight ones in their One-Act, The 11th, and their Choral Readers, Fatality, which also qualified for State competition. A PC Improv team received a two at State.
A total of 29 students competed with Pella Christian’s Speech Team this year, under the direction of Marlo Van Peursem and Lisa Van Gilst.
The Iowa High School Speech Association governs speech competition in Iowa with 487 member schools. Approximately 40,000 Iowa high school students participate in Speech events each year.
Pella High School had a total of three groups of All-Staters.
Two groups were non-performing and one group is performing.
Non performing All Staters included Group Improvisation with Nathan Clayberg, Jack Parisee, Greg Frommelt and Aaron Van Maanen. Musical Theatre (Young Frankenstein) included Tom Palmer, Nathan Clayberg, Greg Frommelt, Aaron Van Maanen and Claire Anderson
Performing All State were Readers Theatre (The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised]) with Colin Jones, Eleanor Witt, Devin McCain and Kody Beller.
