Board holds work session to discuss technology

The Chronicle

Pella — The Pella School Board held a work session on the evening of  Feb. 13. Following the approval of January invoices to be paid, the board heard a presentation regarding technology within the district, specifically Pella's Digital Learning Environment.

Pella's Curriculum Director Lowell Ernst presented to the board an overall summary of the purposes and goals for the use of technology within the district. PHS Principal Eric Nelson also spoke to the board about his use of the E-Walk System, which allows teachers at the high school and middle school a way of immediate feedback of their performance within the classroom during observations.

Eric Pingel, the district's Technology Director, also presented to the board this vision of technology and the current state of technology within the district going forward. A timeline of future technology implementation was presented to the board as well, including discussion of one-to-one implementation - in which each student would have their own laptop computer or similar device within the classroom. Superintendent Greg Ebeling commented that specific implementation is still a couple years away as he felt the district did not want to rush into that and needed more time to gather information on making that decision.

Prior to adjournment, the board discussed Board Policy #213 (Public Participation at Board Meetings Discussion). Proposed changes will be formally reviewed at the next regular meeting to be held Monday, February 27, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. in the High School Media Center.
