DFS awards scholarships again

For its eleventh consecutive year, Pella Dollars for Scholars (DFS) awarded scholarships to both Pella Community and Pella Christian high school seniors at their respective award nights. The annual awards ceremony fell on May 7 for Pella Community students and May 14 for Pella Christian. Students from both schools received a total of $78,700 in the form of 158 scholarships.

After being founded in 2002, Pella DFS awarded its first scholarships to the class of 2003. To date, the volunteer-run organization has awarded $828,700 to graduating seniors. Because of the time and work offered by its volunteers, Pella DFS can allow nearly 100% of the funds raised and donated to be used for its scholarships. Pella DFS president Fred Koogler said, “On behalf of the Board of Directors of Pella Dollars for Scholars, I would like to thank all of our generous donors, board members, and volunteers for their assistance and dedication to the values and ideals of higher education and helping position our local graduates to be among the best in the nation.”

Pella DFS is affiliated with Scholarship America, an organization that has been creating and awarding scholarships nationwide for more than 50 years. Pella DFS is an IRS qualified, tax exempt organization that allows for tax deductible donations used to help graduates of its community schools. The mission of Pella DFS states: “We will engage a community partnership to assure that graduates of Pella Community High School and Pella Christian High School receive financial support for post-secondary education.”
