Pella Jazz competes, places high

Pella — Pella Jazz 2 traveled to Indianola for the Simpson College Jazz Festival on February 1 where they placed 1st in the Class 3A 2nd band division.  The band performed three classic jazz tunes:  Flight of the Foo Birds made famous by the Count Basie written by Neal Hefti and arranged by Phillippe, All Blues - a Miles Davis Classic arranged by Michael Sweeney and the band closed it’s set with Herbie Hancock’s Chameleon arranged by Lopez.

Students featured as soloists were:  Mikayla Huston, Alto Sax; Cole Siewert, Trumpet; Johnny Tiskevics, Trumpet; David Schemm, Trumpet; Sam Yeager, Tenor Sax; Joe Criscuolo, Bari Sax; and Megan Kooker, Vibes.  Mikayla, Johnny, Joe and Megan were given special citations by the judges for outstanding solo’s.  Simpson College also awarded scholarships to outstanding performers in each class for their summer Jazz Camp.  Pella students selected to receive this award were:  Laurel Stelter, Piano; Megan Kooker, Vibes; Sam Dykstra, Bass; and Josh Piersma, Drums.

Pella Jazz 2 is a non auditioned group open to students grades 9-12 interested in learning about and performing in the jazz genre.  They rehearse two times a week under the direction of Kim Benson.  Members of the group are:

Saxophones:  Mikayla Huston, Amber Williams, Mackenzie Dugger, Sam Yeager, Taylor Fleener, Lydia Warin, Jacob Becker, Joe Criscuolo and Eleanor Witt.  Trumpets:  Cole Siewert, Dani Steven, David Schemm, Johnny Tiskevics, Daniel Thompson, Jake Baier and Kody Beller. Trombones:  Kayley DeVos, Collin Yeager, Emily Ebeling, Alex Oakland, Ben Vogel and Emma Johnson.  Rhythm Section:  Piano - Laurel Stelter and Eleanor Witt; Vibes - Megan Kooker; Guitar - Brent VanDerWiel; Bass - Sam Dykstra and Will Lovel; Drums - Josh Piersma and Auxilliary Percussion - Zain VanWyk.

Upcoming Events for Jazz 2:  Hoover Jazz Festival on March 2  and Carnaby Club on April 26 and 27.
