During the Iowa Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance State Convention on Oct. 6 in Spirit Lake, Pella's Tracey Murphy received the IAHPERD State Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award. Murphy currently serves as the Lincoln Elementary and Jefferson Intermediate Health/PE Specialist.
Lincoln Elementary Principal Rich Schulte and his wife Kara attended the awards ceremony in support of Murphy and the Pella PE Program.
Murphy is currently a nominee for the Central District Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year. Central District is part of the American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (National Association) and includes teachers from the states of Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. That convention will be held in Wyoming in February. In being a" Teacher of the Year" Murphy is awarded a travel stipend to attend the Central District Convention.
"I am hoping to attend in February," she told The Chronicle. "I have been teaching and coaching in the Pella CSD for the past 19 years and have thoroughly enjoyed the great students we have in Pella and have appreciated the support given to the Pella Community PE Program and myself from parents, colleagues, administration and the community."
