Pella — Pella Community High School will host the sixth annual City-Wide Speech Night on Friday evening, January 25, 2013 at 7:00 pm in their school auditorium.  The festival will showcase all the 2013 Large Group Speech events of both city high schools—Pella Community and Pella Christian High.  A free-will donation will be taken.

Pella High’s speech program is under the direction of Suzi Jones with assistance by Ashlee Whittington and Pella Christian High’s speech program is under the direction of Marlo Van Peursem with assistance by Helen Luhrs.

“It is always a positive experience for our two schools to get together for a Speech Night,” said Jones. “We encourage the community to come out and watch the performances.”

The fine arts evening will include events from both schools in Readers Theatre, Choral Readers, Ensemble Acting, Musical Theatre, and Improv.  Events will follow one after the other in two different centers at Pella High.

The night will also include a performance from each school’s one-act entry.  Pella High will be performing the one-act Lives of the Saints and Pella Christian will perform Blood Brotherts, for their one-act.

“These students have a lot in common and it’s always great to see them support each other,” said Van Peursem.  “It’s one more way we hope to build friendships between the two local high schools.”

Both schools competed last week Saturday, January 19, at Pella High School in the Iowa High School Speech Association’s District Speech tournament.   Those events that received Division I ratings will advance to the State tournament on Saturday, February 2 at Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School.

Pella High School had nineteen entries at Districts. Fifteen of the nineteen entries earned “one” ratings and will advance to the State Contest.  Pella Christian entered five speech events with three receiving I’s and advancing to the State competition.
