Dutch win 2 in a row after a sluggish start

Last week was a good one for the Pella High Lady Dutch.

After a 1-6 start to the season Coach Krista DeMeulenaere’s softball squad put together back-to-back wins.

Pella won 4-0 over the Centerville Redettes Tuesday, June 4 at home. The Lady Dutch ended the week with a 12-0 blanking of the Grinnell Tigers to open Little Hawkeye Conference action.

In the win over Centerville, Pella rode the pitching arm of Bri Arkema.

The senior allowed Centerville just one hit in picking up the win. She fanned six and walked two.

Pella snapped the scoreless tie with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Allie DeMeulenaere and Sara Tallman each had two hits for the Dutch.

DeMeulenaere also had two RBI for the night.

Morgan Ernst, Andrea Fuller, Diana Zabrodova and Arkema all added one hit for the Lady Dutch.

Pella’s lone extra base hit for the evening was a double off the bat of designated hitter Andrea Fuller.

Taking the loss for Centerville was pitcher Colleen Boyle. Boyle fanned five and walked five in the game. The loss put Centerville at 7-3 overall.

Pella took care of business in five-innings Friday night in Grinnell. The 12-0 win puts the Dutch at 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the LHC.

Arkema was the winning pitcher for the Dutch. She tossed a two-hitter, fanned four and walked two.

The Dutch had eight hits to back up Arkema.

Sara Tallman had two hits while Allie DeMeulenaere, Arkema, Molly Lanke, McKenna Rozenberg, Morgan Bigbee and Alli DeMeulenaere each added one hit.

Arkema’s hit was a home run.

Pella took advantage of receiving 11 walks in the varsity affair.
