A total of 22 young men have reported to golf practice for the 2014 Pella High Little Dutch varsity program.
The Dutch were loaded with talent a year ago and they had a very good year. With all six starters back from that squad coach Bob Fessler looks for some good things again this Spring.
“Not only do we have our top six back from last year, we also have several others that will push for the top six positions,” Fessler commented.
Sean Rennich and Jake Dorman are the returning seniors. Corey Elliott, Colton Bradley, Jack Meyer and Trevor Argo are the returning junior starters. The team went 58-6 last year, but did not advance out of Districts.
Corey Elliott was the lone qualifier for the state meet, and a was a first-team all state player.
Elliott was the individual winner of both the Sectional and District Meets, en route to qualifying for State.
Sean Rennich was a second-team all state selection according to the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association.
Rennich, Elliott and Bradley were all named to the Little Hawkeye Conference team with Bradley claiming runner-up medalist honors.
Freshman Ryan Van Wyk is one of the Pella golfers who may be knocking on the door of opportunity to crack the top six.
The strength of the team according to Fessler is the depth. “Many teams rely on three or four players to do the vast majority of their team scoring, but we have the luxury of having all six players contribute to the scoring of the team..
“These players love to work hard and get better at their skills.”
Pella could be slowed by not having a home course to play on.
The Dutch normally play at Bos Landen, but at the time of this writing the uncertainty of that facility was still up in the air.
