Dutch dominate in Knoxville

Led by their defense the Pella High Little Dutch knocked off cross-county rival Knoxville last Friday evening at Ken Locke Stadium in Knoxville 33-0.

The win elevated the Dutch, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A at the time by the Des Moines Register, to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Class 3A District 8.

The Panthers are still in search of that elusive first win after slipping to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the district.

Knoxville received the opening kickoff but could only get the ball out to their own 15.

A fumble on first down lost six yards for the Panthers. A tackle in the backfield on second down set up third and long.

KHS quarterback Jared McClung was tackled in the end zone on third down as the Dutch defense put up the first points of the game for a 2-0 lead.

Pella fumbled the ensuing kick and Knoxville’s Tanner Dunkin pounced on the loose pigskin.

Knoxville mounted one first down before being forced to punt.

The Dutch marched 68 yards on their first offensive possession of the night for a score. The touchdown was a one-yard run into the end zone by Austin Schulte with 4:26 left in the opening quarter.

The PAT kick by Seth Johnson put the score at 9-0.

Knoxville again was penned up deep in their own end of the field. That soon changed as Dunkin broke loose for a 40-yard gain. The drive stalled the Panthers punted.

With time running out in the quarter, the Panthers were faced with fourth and long following a Dutch quarterback sack.

KHS head coach Troy Rider, pulled a trick play, by calling for a fake punt.

Panther punter Tanner Dunkin hit sophomore Deon Snyder with a 27-yard gain that resulted in a KHS first down at the Dutch 35.

On the drive that continued Knoxville picked up another first down as McClung hit Ross Shelford for a 7-yard gain to the Dutch 22.
