Dutch win big over Chargers

For the third week in a row the Pella High Little Dutch were not challenged on the scoreboard.

The Dutch breezed to a lopsided 42-13 win over the Chariton Chargers last Friday night on the road.

Pella improved to 3-0 in district play and 6-0 for the season as the season starts to wind down. Coach Jay McKinstrey’s squad is currently ranked No. 2 in Class 3A.

Chariton slipped to 1-3 in the district and 2-4 overall with the loss.

All six of Pella’s touchdowns came on the ground. Sophomore quarterback Noah Clayberg led the charge with three scores, the longest coming from 35 yards out.

Nathan Henry, Quinton Murphy and Austin Schulte each had one touchdown for the Dutch.

Henry’s score was a 47-yard scamper. Murphy hit pay dirt from 10 yards out and Schulte on a short three-yard plunge.

Three Pella runners accumulated over 40 yards on the ground. Clayberg ran nine times for 86 yards. Henry dashed through the Chariton defenders seven times for 84 net yards.

Schulte had 47 yards on six attempts.

Pella threw the football just nine times, completing four.

Clayberg was 3-of-6 passing for 38 yards.

Seth Johnson was 5-of-5 on PAT kicks while Anthony Bentzinger was 1-of-1.

Bryce Bortscheller was the only Pella player with two pass receptions. Bortscheller snagged two passes for 34 yards. Andrew Pavlat and Lukas Steenhoek each caught one pass.

Tackle leaders for the Dutch Friday were Mason Van Gorp with five and Cody De Kruyff with six.

Next in line was Garret Jansen with four stops. Nathan Clayberg, Grant Judkins and Quinton Murphy each had a hand in three tackles for Pella.

Chariton had touchdown passes from Christian Bengtson to TJ Hockenson and Derrick Laing.

Up Next

Pella will play host to the Norwalk Warriors in district action Friday starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Warriors (3-3) are led by freshman quarterback Brady Brandsfield. Norwalk has dropped its last three contests, each by less than 10 points.
