A long time coach and good friend once said, “if you do the little things right, winning takes care of itself”.
Playing its fourth game in three days, Pella Christian struggled to do the little things right early in the game against a Norwalk team that was 10-3 on the season, 4-0 in the conference, and ranked in Class 3A. Norwalk didn’t need help although they accepted it.
After four innings, Norwalk was ahead 5-0 despite having only one hit. Christmas came early to Norwalk. At the same time, the Eagles had four hits through four innings but no runs.
Pella Christian finally got on the board in the fifth inning on consecutive singles by Grant Fynaardt, Jason Holwerda, and Spencer Fynaardt to cut the lead to 5-1. The Eagles gave the run back in the sixth inning and trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Here is where you have to give this young team credit. This was their fourth game in three days. They had already lost the first three games and were down 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh to a ranked 3A team. They could have quit. They could have packed it in. They could have given up, but they didn’t. The Boys battled, with a couple of hits, a couple of walks, and a couple of Norwalk errors, the Eagles scored four runs to pull within one run at 6-5 and had runners at first and third when the final out was made. So close… so close. A great effort.
Pella Christian out hit Norwalk 10-3 for the game. The Eagles were led by Caleb Morgan with three hits, Andrew Vander Hart with two hits, and G. Fynaardt, Holwerda, S. Fynaardt, and Dillon Branderhorst with one hit apiece.
The Eagles are 2-4 in the conference and 6-7 overall.
