Eagles go for the win and fall short

The Pella Christian Eagles went down to the wire with Van Meter before falling 14-13 to the Bulldogs.

Van Meter entered the game unbeaten and ranked No. 6 in Class 1A.

Following a strong defensive stand to start the game, the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs inside the PC 20.

The Eagles calmly went down field to score on a drive of 84 yards on 14 plays,

Mason Howerzyl plowed into the Van Meter end zone for a quick 7-0 advantage following the PAT kick by Jacob Brouwer late in the first quarter.

It didn’t take the Bulldogs long to answer as they marched 61 yards on 10 plays to tie the game with 8:33 left in the half. The touchdown was a 14-yard strike from Brandon Brittain to Logan Crawford.

The score remained tied at the intermission break,

In the third the blue and while clad Bulldogs took control with a very impressive 99-yard drive on 13 plays.

The drive ate up 5:40 of the third quarter. The Bulldog score was a one-yard plunge to pay dirt by Brittain to put Van Meter on top 14-7.

The two defenses then took control of the game.

The Eagles flew down the field 70 yards in just three plays, scoring on a 59-yard touchdown strike from Coltin Collins to Jake DeRuiter.

The score came with 1:41 left to be played. It brought Coach Rich Kacmarynski’s team to within a point of the No. 6 Bulldogs, 14-13.

The Eagle coached elected to go for two and a chance to get the win in regulation.

A run for the two-point conversion was stopped just short of the gaol line with Mason Howerzyl carrying the pigskin.

Pella Christian slips to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Class 1A District 7 play.

The Van Meter Bulldogs moved to 5-0 in the district and 7-0 overall with the victory.
