Pella hosted Norwalk Tuesday, May 13, at the High School Stadium in a battle for the Little Hawkeye Conference Title for 2014.
Pella and Norwalk came into the night ranked in the top 5 for Class 2A in Iowa, and the game didn't disappoint.
Right from the beginning Norwalk set the tone with excellent passing and strong attacks through the midfield. The Dutch defense had its hands full, and Pella goalkeeper Chase Petty had an exceptional night with a total of six quality saves. The first half ended 0-0.
Pella continued to shut down Norwalk to start the second half, but the Warriors' attacked well.
After a Pella counterattack was stopped by Norwalk, the Warriors found an open player behind the Pella defense for a breakaway, and Norwalk scored.
The goal by Sam Steenhoek with an assist by Kyle McGuire made the difference in the game. Pella had some opportunities in the final 20 minutes of the game, but could not get close enough for a finish into goal.
Final score was in favor of Norwalk, 1-0.
The Warriors improved to 8-4 overall. All losses were to Class 3A teams. Norwalk moved to 6-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
Pella slips to 5-1 in the league and to 10-4-1 for the season.
