Dutch blank No. 3 Norwalk 27-0 in 3A

Pella — Norwalk was without a few starters Friday night, but it might not have mattered anyway as the Pella Dutch were dominant on both sides of the football en route to a win over the No. 3 Warriors 27-0 in Norwalk.

A 33-yard field goal by Seth Johnson opened the scoring for the Dutch in the first quarter.

Early in the second stanza Matt Nieuwsma added a short one-yard plunge into the end zone for a 10-0 lead.

With 2:49 left in the opening half Johnson added his second field goal of the evening, this time from 33-yards for a 13-0 advantage.

Norwalk turned the ball over and the Dutch capitalized with a 22-yard halfback pass from Daniel Langenfeld to Jacob Vollmar for a touchdown. The score came 14 seconds after the previous Dutch tally for a commanding 20-0 lead at the half.

Pella added a Josh De Waard one-yard score with 5:32 left in the game to make the final 27-0.

The win raised the Dutch mark to 5-2 overall and to 4-0 in Class 3A District 8.

Norwalk lost for the first time this season as they are now 6-1 for the season and 3-1 in district action.

The Numbers

Pella had 16 first downs in the contest compared to just six for Norwalk.

The Warriors played the game without their starting quarterback for the season and a top running back, due to injuries.

Pella had 201 yards rushing and 105 passing for 306 yards of offense.

Norwalk totaled 68 yards rushing and 38 passing for 106 yards of net offense.

Freshman Nathan Henry led the Dutch ground game with 74 yards on 15 carries and Langenfeld added 43 yards on six attempts followed by Lukas Steenhoek with 35 on seven.

Norwalk’s leading runner was Keaton Klocko with 94 yards on 15 attempts.

De Waard was 11-of-15 passing for 83 yards. Jacob Vollmar caught four passes for 41 yards and Henry snagged two for 27.

Norwalk fumbled six times and lost four. Pella lost two fumbles in the game.

Pella fumble recoveries were by Langenfeld, Brian Rundle and Chase Neff.

Leading the Pella defense on the tackle charts were Nathan Clayberg with 10, Christian Stafford and Garret Jansen with seven each and Cody DeKruyff, Brandon Konfrst, Josh Hileman, Langenfeld and De Waard, each with four.

“Our kids played a very good football game. I thought our kids were mentally, physically  and emotionally ready to play. It was an exciting win for Pella,” stated Coach Jay McKinstrey.

Up Next

The Dutch will host rival Oskaloosa Friday night in district play starring at 7:30 p.m. The Indians head to Pella with a mark of 1-3 in the district and 1-6 overall.

McKinstrey commented about the Indians, “They are a rival game and they play a lot of young players. Oskaloosa has played extremely well in their last two games. They are physical and play very hard.”
