Newton — The Pella High Little Dutch baseball team traveled to Newton Wednesday night and came home with a 6-5 win.
The victory came behind the strong pitching performance of junior Tanner Wood. Wood struck out seven and only gave up six hits in five innings of work. Fellow junior Marcus Wittmer came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth to rack up two more strikeouts for the Dutch and allowed only one hit in relief.
Pella jumped on the board in the top of the first when senior Grant Judkins singled to center to bring leadoff batter, Wood, home.
In the third, junior Jason Morgan nearly sent one over the fence for a two-run double to put the Dutch up 3-0. Wittmer added an RBI double of his own to increase Pella's lead.
The Dutch immediately picked up where they left off in the top of the fourth when junior Colin Jones hit his own double, down the left field line. Wood brought Jones home on an RBI single.
With Pella ahead 5-0, the Cardinals were able to take advantage of Pella miscues to put three on the board in the Newton half of the fourth. The Dutch got an insurance run in the top of the fifth, when Morgan was able to score on senior Ethan Butler's shot to deep center. Newton came back to score two more in the fifth, but the Dutch were able to hold on for the one-run victory.
The Dutch travel to Oskaloosa Friday night for a double-header.
