Eagles fall on the road to Cardinals

The Pella Christian Eagles opened Little Hawkeye Conference play on the road for the first time this year Tuesday night.

The Eagles fell 25-20, 25-22, 25-16 to the Newton Cardinals.

The loss dropped PC to 2-11 overall and to 0-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

PC Coach Cindy Nikkel commented, “We need to serve better and receive serve better. I thought our offense and defense were ok for the most part.”

The Eagles have reshuffled their lineup on numerous occasions as injuries have slowed the progress, along with a very rigid schedule.

PC has played in tournament at Ames and Iowa City in addition to facing Marshalltown and Johnston in duals to open the 2013 season.

In the Newton contest the Eagles trailed 5-1 early before fighting back to within a point at 15-14.

The Eagles never could get control of the game and eventually fell 25-20.

Game two saw the Eagles jump to a 9-3 advantage early following an ace serve by Abby Pleima.

The Cardinals caught up and tied the game at 14 all.

PC couldn’t keep up with the Cardinals as they fell 25-22.

A kill by Becca Gritters brought the Eagles within two points at 24-22 but it wasn’t enough.

In game three the story was the same. The contest was knotted at 12 all before Newton took control. to win 25-16.

PC had eight kills from Becca Gritters, five from Hannah Beltman and four by Lauren Jungling.

Jungling had 15 assists in the contest.

Alyssa Starkey had 16 digs for the PC defense and Logan De Graaf finished with 12.

Beltman recorded five blocks to lead the way and Jungling was 12-of-12 serving with two aces. De Graaf also had three blocks in the contest.
