Pella Christian upset in Lions' den

The Pella Christian Eagles led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter of play last Friday night on the road.

In the end, it proved to not be enough as the Des Moines Christian Lions rallied to top the Eagles 30-17 in a Class 1A District 7 contest played in Johnston.

Miles Wichhart scored on a four-yard run to put the Eagles on top 7-0 following the PAT kick by Jacob Brouwer.

Brouwer added a short 21-yard field goal for a 10-0 PC lead before the opening quarter came to a close.

DMC went on a 98-yard touchdown drive to end the first half scoring as quarterback Grant Brockhouse hit Jake Lowe on a 13-yard pass to cut the deficit to 10-7 at the halftime break.

The Lions took advantage of two big defensive plays to pull out the win.

The first was a 57-yard fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by Peprah Danquah in he third quarter to take a 14-10 lead.

Dillon Bruxvoort added a 34-yard touchdown run for the Lions in the third quarter for a 20-10 lead as the PAT attempt was no good.

Bryan Adamson then picked off a PC pass attempt by Colten Collins in the fourth quarter. The Adamson return was for 49-yards and a touchdown that put the game on ice for the Lions with the 27-10 lead.

Jackson Webster added a 42-yard field goal for DMC for insurance and a 30-10 lead.

Coach Rich Kacmarynski’s team scored the final touchdown of the night as Mason Howerzyl rambled 16 yards to make the final 30-17.

It proved to be a tough loss for the Eagles who are now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Class 1A District 7 play.

The Numbers

PC was led in rushing by Mason Howerzyl with 159 yards on 29 attempts.

Carson Dugger was next in line rushing for the Eagles with 22 yards on four carries.
