Eagles rebound at North Mahaska

The Pella Christian Eagles have played one of the more difficult seasons and they have done it with a depleted roster, due to injuries.

Coach Cindy Nikkel commented after a loss against the Newton Cardinals last week, the team just needs to play together and gain some confidence.

The confidence came Saturday at the North Mahaska Invitational.

The Eagles went 3-0 in pool play and they knocked off No. 2 ranked Sigourney in the semi-finals 21-18, 21-14 to move on to the championship match of the tournament against the Grinnell Tigers.

In the title match the Eagles came up victorious to win the tournament. PC beat the Tigers of Grinnell, 21-7, 21-18.

The five wins for the day moves the Eagles to 5-11 overall.

In the title match the Eagles had two blocks, three kills, two aces and five digs from Logan De Graaf, Lauren Jungling added four aces and nine assists.

Also coming up big for the Eagles in the title match was Alyssa Starkey with 13 digs and four assists and Hannah Beltman added three blocks.

In the win over the Sigourney Savages the Eagles had three blocks, three kills, three blocks and eight digs by De Graaf and Jungling contributed three aces and 11 assists.

Starkey again had strong numbers with 12 digs and two aces.

The pool wins were over Lynnville-Sully 21-11, 21-16 where Becca Gritters led with seven kills, De Graaf had four and Abby Pleima totaled three aces and five assists.

HLV was a pool win by the score of 16-21, 21-11, 16-14 in a match that went down to the wire.

Rachel Ver Meer had two aces against HLV. Beltman four kills, Jungling three aces and eight assists and Starkey seven digs.

PC also beat North Mahaska in pool play 21-16, 21-8 behind three aces from Pleima and seven digs.

Gritters had seven kills, Starkey 10 digs, Beltman three blocks and four kills and De Graaf three kills, two blocks and eight digs against the NM Warhawks.

“Today we turned the ship around after the injuries and facing 5A schools,” Coach Nikkel replied.

Up Next

The Eagles will host the Pella Christian Invitational starting Saturday morning at the high school.
