---- — MONMOUTH, ILL.-The Central College men’s soccer team outlasted Monmouth 2-1 on Wednesday Sept. 18, for its second straight one-goal win.
“We certainly have made it interesting these past two games,” coach Garry Laidlaw said.
The Dutch took the early advantage, as forward Aleksandar Glavas scored his seventh goal of the season on a direct free kick in the 11th minute.
The remainder of the first period was scoreless. Central led by a wide margin in every offensive category at halftime. The Dutch led in shots (10-3), shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (6-2).
The Fighting Scots (1-5-1) were quick out of the gate, scoring less than two minutes after the second period began.
The two teams were scoreless for the next 13 minutes, but midfielder Dillon Thornbury ended the drought and put the Dutch on top for good. Midfielder Daniel Peacock helped set up the score.
Laidlaw praised the efforts of defenders Jeremy Dolder and Owen Shawgo, midfielders Jake Stein (senior, Prairie City, PCM HS), Kyle Maynard and Thornbury.
Central finished with a significant advantage in shots (18-4), shots on goal (10-3) and corner kicks (8-2).
Glavas led the offensive attack with seven shots, three on goal, and one goal. Thornbury added four shots on goal and one goal.
Goalkeeper Josh Carpenter made two saves in his third start between the pipes.
The Dutch improved to 4-3 with the win.
