Pella’s two highly ranked Class 3A varsity cross country teams both finished in fourth place at the Indianola Invitational Thursday, Sept. 26.
The Pella Lady Dutch took to the course and scored 96 points trailing Urbandale with 51, Waukee at 55 and Ankeny Centennial with 75 points.
Pella’s varsity boys’ squad tallied 120 points for fourth place. The Dutch trailed Johnston with 27 points, Ames with 74 and Indianola with 115 points.
Leading the way for Coach Doug Cutler’s Pella squad were the two talented freshmen, Kelcey Blommers in fourth at 15:35 and Tesss Roorda fifth at 15:41.
Rounding out the Lady Dutch varsity total were Payton Phelps in 11th at 16:02 and Nicole Schebbe in 34th at 17:33.
All four Pella runners who counted in the team total were freshmen.
Junior Katie Canfield was the fifth Pella runner to score points. Canfield was 42nd with a time of 17:53.
The next to cross the finish line for the Dutch were Abby Fyfe in 43rd place at 17:58 and Sydney Swanson 44th at 17:59.
Teams the Pella Lady Dutch finished in front of at the meet included Ankeny 128 points, Boone 196, DC-Grimes 206, Ames JV 209, Indianola 240, Valley 241, Norwalk 320, Lincoln 371.
The Pella JV girls’ were fourth in the team standings with 109 points.
Taryn Ernst was the Pella JV leader in 14th place at 17:51 followed by Mackenzie Gustafson in 17th at 18:06.
The rest of the Pella JV scoring had Becky Visser in 26th, Laura Kleven 32nd and Cathryn Yoder in 41st place.
The Pella varsity boys’ were paced by Ben Warner in seventh place at 17:18 over the 5K course.
Jordan Pingel in 15th place at 17:55, Adam Sievers 17th at 17:58, Travis Dingemann in 40th at 18:40 and Josh Bailey 41st also at 18:40 rounded out the team total for the day.
Other Pella runners who competed were Aaron Houtz 58th at 18:58 and Levi Heschke 59th at 19:00.
Pella was seventh in the JV boys’ race with 172 points.
Pacing the Pella JV boys’ team were Sawyer Burton in 10th at 18:57, Tom Pettit 20th at 19:22, Tom Palmer 39th, David Schemm 41st and Tanner Phelps 62nd place.
The Dutch head to Norwalk Monday, Oct. 7 to race at McAninch Sports Complex in a meeting getting underway at 4:30 p.m.
