First Baptist Church of Pella celebrated their 175th anniversary on Sept. 8, receiving recognition from the Mid-American Baptist Churches of Iowa and Minnesota.

The church was presented with a certificate by Rev. Jacquline Saxon, Executive Minister of Mid-American Baptist Churches, during their Sunday church service. The establishment is the first church in Pella to receive the recognition.

“It’s a great way of commemorating the fact that the church has been around for 175 years,” said Saxon. “In this day and age, churches are closing for lots of reasons. New ones are forming, but to say that you’ve been here for 175 years in various transformations is a big deal.”

Saxon stated other churches throughout the state will be celebrating similar milestones.

“It’s very rare, and to me, it says that Pella is relevant,” added Saxon. “Pella FBC has something to say. If they weren’t here, there would be a void, and there would be something missing. I am proud of them.”

The church continued their celebration with a picnic in Caldwell Park.
