IOWA CITY — A man serving a prison sentence on charges from Marion County died Thursday.

The Iowa Department of Corrections said George Jochem Hettinga, 67, of Pella, died at 2:16 p.m. at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Officials said in a press release that Hettinga died due to a “chronic illness.”

Hettinga had been serving a 60-year maximum term for the crime of controlled substance violations (with habitual offender enhancements) and habitual offender-property from Marion County. His incarceration began on October 18, 2018.
