Planning Independence Day festivities? People are urged to celebrate safely. July often has some of the highest incidents of traffic and boating accidents, vehicle and watercraft thefts and, injuries and property damage related to fireworks.
Here are some safety tips from State Farm to keep you safe this Independence Day.
There are nearly 20,000 reports of fireworks-associated fires each year. To avoid injury and property damage, use caution when handling fireworks. Always purchase fireworks from a licensed vendor.
Be sure to check local laws and fireworks ordinances. Have water, an extinguisher and first aid kit nearby. Ignite fireworks one at a time in cleared areas on a hard, flat and level surface. Secure dogs and other pets in a quiet space at home
When hosting a party, check your lease or homeowner’s association rules about hosting gatherings in your home. Be a good neighbor and let neighbors know about your plans in case they have any concerns. Consider crating your dog or putting your cat behind a closed door to prevent them from getting scared by strangers or loud noises.
At least one hour before the party wraps up, stop serving alcohol and serve additional snacks. Organize rides or ride shares as necessary.
July often has high instances of boating collisions and thefts. Boat insurance policies can vary widely in what they do and do not cover based on a number of considerations, including the type of boat, the waters it will traffic, and how many months of the year the boat will be used. Review this information in your coverage.
Take photos of the boat and its equipment, making sure to add the value of boat equipment (life preservers, depth/fish finders, anchors, etc.) when deciding the amount of insurance. Do not leave your title or registration papers in the boat. Remove expensive equipment when not in use.
