Pella Christian High School’s Large Group Speech Forensic Team earned top marks at the Iowa High School Speech Association State Speech competition held at Cedar Rapids Washington High School on Feb. 8.

Two PCHS events were selected as Outstanding Performers, each receiving an All-State nomination and qualifying them to perform at the All-State Festival to be held Saturday, Feb. 22 on Iowa State University’s campus. A third event also received a Non-Performing All-State nomination.

Performing at the All-State festival will be PC’s Readers Theatre “And Others,” and PC’s Choral Readers “And.” A third event, PC’s One Act “Rags,” was nominated as a Non-Performing All-State event.

Twenty-seven PCHS students earned All-State honors with 22 students performing.

Other PCHS events competing at State Speech include a Short Film “Just Keep Swimming,” which also earned a one, an Ensemble Act “Offerings,” and a Musical Theatre “Six,” which both earned a two.

A total of 36 students competed with PC’s Speech Team this year under the direction of Lisa Van Gilst, Cory Van Gilst and Marlo Van Peursem. The IHSSA governs speech competitions in Iowa with 487 member schools. Approximately 40,000 Iowa high school students participate in speech events each year.
