Residents at Vriendschap Village partnered with Crossroads of Pella to fundraise money for two adolescent girls to attend a positive camping experience.

The initiative was to raise enough money for the girls to attend Lake View Camp, a non-profit camping ministry based in Pella. The goal was to sell 250 boxed lunches. After advertising the fundraising event for only a few days, the retirement community increased their stock to 400 due to high demand.

The boxed lunches included Pella bologna on a bakery bun, chips, fruit and a scotcharoo bar. Residents at the retirement community assembled and packaged the 400 boxed lunches in just an hour.

Buyers were able to come through a makeshift drive-thru at the Village on Friday or have the boxed lunches delivered to them directly. Two residents, Judy Ralph and Irene Blom, volunteered to hand out the boxed lunches and handle money for the drive-thru.

“Any way they [residents] can give back to the community and still be involved is the purpose,” said Executive Director of Vriendschap Village Lisa White. “They can still contribute in some way.”
