On June 7, 2008, a group of over 35 supporters came together at 609 E. Marion Street in Knoxville to participate in a wall-raising celebration for the newest Habitat for Humanity of Marion County, Inc. house. This will be the 22nd house built by Habitat in Marion County. Rita Crabtree, along with her three children, will become the homeowners of this new house.

The ceremony consisted of introductions and a brief history of Habitat in Marion County given by Carlene Lutz, Habitat’s President. A call to worship was given by Conrad Nelson, a Marion County Thrivent member, a scripture reading of Matthew 7:24-29 was given by Lisa Houser, Habitat’s Executive Director, and a prayer of blessing was given by Ken Nollen, Habitat board member and building committee chair. A brief history of Thrivent was given by Delores Ransaw, South Central Iowa Thrivent member. Sixty-five percent of the cost of this house, or $57,200, is funded by a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The Marion County and South Central Iowa Chapters of Thrivent will provide an additional $8,800. In addition, 50 percent of the volunteers who will build this house will be Lutherans and 25 percent will be Thrivent members. Habitat is very grateful for this generosity and the opportunity to work together to build this house. Habitat families are not given houses, rather they are required to purchase the house from Habitat. The cost of the house is based on construction costs, with mostly volunteer labor. Habitat has the Christian belief of not charging interest on the mortgage. This makes most Habitat homes more affordable than what some families are paying in rent. Habitat homes are decent and affordable, not luxurious. Habitat partner families are required to volunteer a certain amount of “sweat equity” hours toward building their home, other Habitat houses, and/or volunteering in the community.
