Pella resident inducted into IHSSA Hall of Fame

Marilyn M. Shaw and Dr. Dennis Doyle accept their awards for being inducted into the Iowa High School Speech Association Hall of Fame on Oct. 11.

The Iowa High School Speech Association inducted their 66th and 67th members into the Hall of Fame on Oct. 11 at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames.

This year’s inductees include Dr. Dennis Doyle of Pella and Ms. Marilyn M. Shaw of Cedar Falls.

The IHSSA Hall of Fame was conceived in 1976. It is presented to a distinguished individual of statewide reputation and outstanding accomplishments. This is the highest honor the IHSSA may confer on an individual. The contribution and service given by the inductee stem from dedication and commitment to the IHSSA beyond normally expected and superlative identification.

Dr. Doyle is a long time IHSSA judge and coach from the Pella area. He began his coaching career at Fairfield High School and is now employed at Central College. In his years of service, he has been the Large Group and IE coach and a very sought-out judge for the IHSSA.

Dr. Doyle has been a judge at all levels for the IHSSA, including District, State, to the All-State level in both the IE and LG areas of the IHSSA. Sometimes, he also judges all six levels in one year, being the only person to do this in the history of the IHSSA. Dr. Doyle has been asked to speak and present at the IHSSA Coaches Convention, the IHSSA Judges/Coaches workshop and the SE District meetings on many occasions and at other statewide conferences. He continues to be an outstanding judge and a resource for the SE District in the IHSSA and the entire state.

Ms. Marilyn M. Shaw is the long time IHSSA coach, judge and festival manager for the IHSSA for the IE All-State Festival held at University of Northern Iowa. In her time as a coach, she has been the Large Group and Individual Events coach for several schools and for many years. Shaw has been the festival manager for the IE All-State Festival at UNI for many years and continues in that role.

Shaw has been asked to speak and present at the IHSSA Coaches Convention, IHSSA Summer Judges and Coaches workshop, conference events and many other speech events in the state. She has judged at District, State and All-State in both the IE and LG areas for the IHSSA and continues to do so. She has been instrumental in providing college credit for the IHSSA Coaches Convention and working with many former UNI students through her work at the IHSSA.

It is with pleasure that the IHSSA welcomes Dr. Doyle and Shaw into the Iowa High School Speech Association Hall of Fame.
