Our family recently traveled from Evansville, Indiana to Pella for Tulip Time. Our main objective was to bring our mother, Mary Ann Linder Coulter, to Pella to relive some of her memories from when she lived in Pella in the 1930s.
The visit was so much more rewarding than we could have anticipated. All of us were so impressed with Pella. It is truly a vibrant and welcoming community, alive with the spirit of its people, Dutch heritage and traditions, and the family atmosphere which pervaded the festivities. The support of Pella's citizens, young and old alike, was evident in the events, the demonstrations, and the parade. We have never attended a better-organized event.
Although we had heard great stories about Pella from our mother, we could never have imagined what a charming, friendly and beautiful town it is. We are particularly grateful to Lori Witt and Bruce Boertje who helped this little group of complete strangers locate Mary Ann's old house, the JC Penney store where her father (our grandpapa) was manager, and several articles about Mary Ann and her family. They brought our visit to life!
We also deeply appreciate the Chronicle's coverage of our trip, the fine article written by Emily Hawk, and the photos taken by Kyle Ocker. All of you are so kind to make a 96-year-old woman feel like an honored guest. We look forward to many happy times talking about our Pella adventure.
