Captains are selected for both the boys and girls All -Marion County Basketball Teams.

One rule goes into place when selecting a captain for the basketball teams; the player must be a senior.

Captain for the girls’ squad this year is Katie Keitges, a senior who led the Knoxville Panthers to a mark of 20-3.

Katie Keitges, Maggie Wilkins, Allison Van Gorp, Brooke Roby and Madison Naig are the repeat players on the All-Marion County Girls’ squad from a year ago. Keitges was named first team all-state by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association in Class 4A and she was a second-team selection on the IPSWA (Iowa Print Sports Writers Association) squad.

Logan Shetterly, of Pella, is the captain of the boys’ All-Marion County Team. Shetterly helped the Dutch post a record of 19-6 in the rugged Little Hawkeye Conference. He was named second-team all-state by the IPSWA.

Five of the 10 players who were named to the All-Marion County Boys’ Team were on the team a year ago. The list includes, Shetterly, Josh Van Gorp, Kieren Nichols, Teron Mount and Ryan Krpan.

It should be noted that all but one player named to the all-county squad was named first or second team all-conference in their respective leagues. The other players, had statistics worthy of being named to the all-county honorable mention basketball team.

An effort is made to have a representative from all teams in the county on this special squad, it doesn’t always happen. The reason why there are more boys on the 2020 squad than girls is to properly recognize those who received all-conference honors within their leagues and there were only two girls teams in the county with winning records this year compared to only two losing marks in the boys rank.

Marion County Bank is the sole sponsor of the all-county squad in the Pella Chronicle and the Knoxville Journal-Express. Those of us at the newspaper are pleased that the bank has stepped up once again to honor the student-athletes in the county.

Without the support of Marion County Bank in Pella, Knoxville and Melcher-Dallas, this special selection would not be possible. Let them know you appreciate their support for the student-athletes from around the county.
