A total of 10 young men have reported to practice to open the 2019 cross country season at Pella Christian.
The Eagles are coached by Mike Buchheit, who is starting his second year in charge of the program.
Five lettermen are expected to lead the way for the Eagles this fall. Those back with letters include Daniel Mora Demestri and Jason Kim, a pair of seniors.
Brayton Juffer, is a junior letter winner while Micah DeHaan and Jack Zula are sophomores who lettered a year ago.
Demestri is the top male athlete returning for PC. Daniel is expected to challenge for a State Cross Country appearance the end of October, according to his coach.
Buchheit said the strength of the team is that many on the team are driven toward self improvement.
The concern for both the boys and the girls teams at PC is the lack of depth.
The Eagles were eighth in the Little Hawkeye Conference Meet held in Oskaloosa on a rather soggy course.
PC’s top returner from that meet is Demestri, who was 25th in the varsity race.
Freshmen Ben Gosselink and Kaden Van Wyngarden are two freshmen who hope to crack the varsity lineup.
Buchheit stated, “Our boys will be relying on several underclassmen to fill several key spots.”
The Eagles will open the season Thursday, Aug. 29 running at the Gilbert Invite on the Iowa State University campus.
