The scene was set on Eagle Lane for a Pella Christian win over the Oskaloosa Indians Monday night June 17. Eagle ace, Will Dembski was on the bump, the bats had been alive and the feeling of victory was in the air. But the air went out of the balloon quickly as the Indians chased Dembski with a four spot in the first inning.

“There are days in this game of baseball when you just don’t have it,” PC Coach Jeff Bruxvoort said. “And Will just didn’t have it tonight. Everything he threw in there, they hit. They opened the inning with four straight hits and then a walk and a couple of errors increased the frustration. I decided to lift him early and that way his pitch count was low enough that he would be able to throw Wednesday.”

Matthew Bokhoven came on and stopped the bleeding and then had a 1-2-3 second inning. Bokhoven was touched for three runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. He had scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth before running out of gas in the seventh. Jack Anderson came on with one out in the seventh to finish the game.

The Eagles tried to answer the Indian surge in the bottom of the first, but could only come up with a single run. Cole Webster led off with a double into the left field corner and he moved to third on a base hit by Lawson Bruxvoort. Webster then scored on a ground out by Devin Haveman. That would be all the Eagles would score until the bottom of the sixth inning when Dembski ripped a leadoff triple and scored on a single by Bokhoven.

“We just couldn’t get started,” Coach Bruxvoort lamented. “It just wasn’t our night and things didn’t click. I give credit to our guys. They kept battling and made them work for everything they got.”

Dembski’s triple, Webster’s double, an RBI single by Bokhoven and singles by Dan Jungling and Lawson Bruxvoort would be all the offense the Eagles could muster.

The Indians were led by a triple and a single by Tyler Miller, a double by Colton Butler and three singles by Wyatt Krier.

The loss drops the Eagles to 8-7 on the season and 5-4 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Pella Christian hitting: Cole Webster 1-for-3, Bruxvoort 1-for-4, Dembski 1-for-3, Bokhoven 1-for-3, Dan Jungling 1-for-2.
