The Dallas Center-Grimes Fillies are one of the top tier teams in the Little Hawkeye Conference and Monday, Feb. 3, they paid a visit to Eagle Lane to take on the Pella Christian girls in a makeup contest. The Eagles got off to a good start and took an 8-7 lead after five minutes of play on a driving three point play by Chloe Morgan. But the Fillies finished the first period with a 6-2 surge to take a 13-10 lead into the second stanza.
It was in the second and third quarters that the Fillies extended their lead to as much as 18 points. The Eagles had spurts of scoring, but could not maintain much consistency on offense.
In the second period it was Allison Van Gorp and Emma Witzenburg that provided the bulk of the scoring and in the third period it was Van Gorp and Morgan that carried the Eagles. But not enough people were involved in the scoring to keep pace with DC-G and the Fillies took a 47 -29 lead into the final eight minutes.
The Eagles did manage to salvage a 20 -15 edge in the final quarter, but it was too little, too late as DC-G carried off a 62-49 win. In that final period, Morgan, Witzenburg and Adrie Fransman each hit a three point basket and Morgan tallied seven points.
“We were not mentally prepared for this game,” PC coach Brad Engbers said. “We have got to have everybody on the same page. We let mistakes turn into more mistakes and our heads were down. In the fourth quarter we were more aggressive and did a better job of finding the post. Joslyn Terpstra gave us a nice spark off the bench.”
Van Gorp led the Eagles with 18 points and 17 rebounds and Morgan was also in double digits with 16 points.
Witzenburg was the assist leader with three and she shared the steal lead with Morgan with two each.
Jordan Cunningham led the Fillies with 22 points and Julia Reis added 19 points.
