The Pella Christian Eagles hosted the Mustangs from Dallas Center-Grimes Monday, Feb. 3. The Eagles were coming off a gut wrenching loss to Indianola on Friday night and just couldn’t seem to find any traction in a 64-56 loss to the Mustangs.
DC-G bolted out to an 18-12 lead after the first eight minutes while the Eagles were having trouble getting shots to fall. It seemed that more than once a PC shot would go in the basket and spin back out. Finally in the last two minutes of the quarter the Eagles would get three point baskets from Dan Jungling and Keean Cadwell to make the score closer than it might have been.
The Eagles would outscore the Mustangs 16-14 in the second stanza, but still trailed 32-28 at intermission. In that second period the Eagles would get a pair of triples and a pair of free throws from Ryan Vande Haar and a pair of inside buckets from Josh Van Gorp.
The Eagles crept even closer after three quarters with a 15-12 edge to cut the deficit to one at 44-43. A three and a rebound put back by Cadwell, an inside three point play by Van Gorp and a three ball by Bryant Agre led the Eagle charge in the period.
But in the final eight minutes the Mustangs inserted the dagger and twisted it with three consecutive long balls that started a 12-5 run that would knock the Eagles out of contention.
“We were shooting in tough luck tonight,” PC coach Larry Hessing said. “We had balls go down and come back out and fall the wrong way off the rim. It boils down to the fact that you have to make shots and get stops. Their shooting was good and you have to give credit there. We lost patience at times and that has been an issue this year. We put ourselves in a tough spot after the Indianola game and we just have to find our stride again. We have to rebound emotionally.”
The Eagles had four players in double digits, but just not enough points. Cadwell and Van Gorp each had 12 points and Jungling and Vande Haar each had 10 points. Cole Glasgow led the Mustangs with 26 points and Trenton Liebe added 16.
