There are quite a few new faces on the Pella High varsity volleyball team.
Pella Coach Catie Brand and her assistants are probably the only people, who don’t need a program to identify the players. Brand knows this is a rebuilding year for the Dutch.
Well, if the first match of the season is any indication, the rebuild is off to a great start.
Pella travelled to Huxley to face the Ballard Bombers to open the year August 27.
The Dutch left the Ballard gymnasium with a hard fought 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 28-26 win over the Bombers.
In the past, Emily Holterhaus was the go-to-player in the front row for kills.
With her graduation, the attack is now spread out, making Pella much more unpredictable.
Five players had six or more kills for Pella in the Tuesday contest.
Nine players saw time in the varsity match for the Dutch, eight of them are underclassmen.
Bailey Van Voorst was the hitting leader for Pella with 11 kills for the night. Ella Corbin was right behind with 10 followed by Meredith Rowe with eight, Courtney Paxton seven and Brynn Randol with six.
Continuing with the offense, Courtney Thompson and Payton Turner each had five ace serves.
As a team the Dutch were 83-of-94 serving for .883 percent.
Sophomore Anna Vander Waal, is one of the players who returned to the team with a lot of experience setting the ball. She had 38 assists in the win over Ballard.
On the flip side of the statistics are the defensive numbers.
Turner had 18 digs while Thompson totaled seven and Van Voorst had six.
