The Pella Christian Eagles continue to show spirit as they fight and claw their way through varsity basketball play on the court.

The PC girls’ are still searching for that ever so elusive first win of the season.

For the second night in a row Coach Brad Engbers’ squad had a chance to win, but came up short at the end.

The Newton Cardinals broke from a 32-31 advantage at halftime to pull out a hard earned 64-51 win.

PC was tied with the Cardinals at 41 in the third before Newton went on an 11-0 run.

Victoria Reynolds and Chassidy Henwood each had 14 points for Newton followed by Aurora Nehring with 12.

PC drained seven 3-point shots in the first half as the Cardinals collapsed the defense around Eagle post player, Allison Van Gorp.

Van Gorp was held in check with only four points facing many double teams throughout the game. She did however pull down 15 rebounds for PC.

Showing the way for PC offensively were Chloe Morgan with 12 points and Emma Witzenberg with 11.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 0-10 overall and to 0-5 in the Little Hawkeye.

Newton improved to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the league.

Newton was aided heavily by their work on the boards, pulling in 46 rebounds, 17 of them at the offensive end of the court.

PC travels to Eddyville to face the Rockets Thursday, Jan. 23 in a JV-Varsity girls affair tipping at 5 p.m.
