Not only did the Pella Christian Eagles lose a bevy of strong volleyball players from the 2018 squad that was 20-18, but also gone is veteran head coach John Evenhouse, who amassed well over 500 career wins.
Replacing the coach for 2019 will be Joanna Settles. She is married to former Iowa basketball star Jess Settles.
The coach has 21 players who have reported to practice in grades 10-12, five of them being seniors.
“We return little varsity experience,” Settles said.
Those with the most experience include Molly Bolt, Emerson Sarver, Anna Van Zee and Lizzy Posthuma.
“The strength of the team is senior leadership. The weakness will be developing the younger girls to gain experience,” the coach said.
Two young players, who look to help include sophomores Avey Amelse and Sarah Gritters.
“This young team needs to gel early to gain momentum for the season,” Settles said.
