Pella and Newton played a pair of wild exciting baseball games Monday, June 10 in Newton.
The Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader saw the Pella High Dutch rally from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Cardinals 8-7 in 9-innings. The Dutch came back for the sweep with a 6-5 win that saw Newton scored three in the bottom of the seventh to make it interesting.
In the opener, the Dutch fell behind 5-1 after three innings of play.
Pella closed the gap to 5-4 before the Cardinals moved the advantage back to 7-4 entering the seventh.
That is when Coach Jesse Jablonski’s team exploded for three runs in the seventh to force extra time on the field.
Pella eventually pulled off an 8-7 win with Parker Van Waardhuizen declared the winning pitcher in relief of starter Ben Akers.
Ryan Mace pitched the ninth for the save.
Pella bats were hot in the opener as they had 12 as a team. Junior Noah Van Vark was 3-of-5 at the dish with two doubles and three RBI.
Mace, Akers and Drew Hillman each added two hits for Pella.
Not to be outdone, game two had it’s fair share of excitement as well.
Fans certainly got entertained throughout the night.
Pella led mid-way through the nightcap 3-2 before tacking on solo runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh for a 6-2 lead.
Newton staged a comeback in the seventh but it fell a run short as the Dutch prevailed 6-5.
Tanner Dunsbergen gained the win on the mound with six innings of work. He gave up six hits and two runs, fanned five and walked one.
Kamden Lambert worked the seventh for Pella.
Mace was the hitting star for the Dutch going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Nick Grandia also collected two hits, while the Dutch had seven hits overall.
The two wins put the Dutch at 5-6 overall and at 2-3 in the Little Hawkeye.
