PELLA — A muddy field didn’t slow the Central College men’s soccer team as it completed a clean sweep of top-10 opponents this season with a 3-2 victory over No. 9 Loras College Saturday afternoon.
The Dutch (10-1-1, 2-0-0 American Rivers Conference) had also beaten No. 8 Luther College 2-1 last Saturday. It’s the first victory for Central over Loras (9-3-1, 1-1-0 conference) since October 22, 2008.
“I absolutely couldn’t be more proud of our guys,” coach Garry Laidlaw said. “This team continues to amaze me, especially for the amount of youth we have on it and what they have been able to pull off.”
Loras got out to an early lead with a goal at the 12:02 mark. Central quickly answered less than two minutes later with a Nathan Casas goal at 13:47.
Midfielder Tony Cervelli gave Central a 2-1 lead in the 32nd minute with an assist from midfielder Zach Worster.
“Tony seems to find himself in the right place at the right time,” Laidlaw said.
The game-winning goal was credited to midfielder Matthew West when he scored in the 50th minute on an assist from forward Charlie Pritchard.
