It was opening night for the Pella Christian Lady Eagles and the Van Meter Bulldogs were their guests. The Eagles started well with a 12-7 lead after one quarter, but the Bulldogs grabbed the bone in the second period and wouldn’t give it back.
Cold shooting, defensive breakdowns and foul problems plagued the Eagles as Van Meter outscored them 17-5 in the second stanza to take a 24-17 lead into intermission.
In that first half the Eagles had problems getting into the offensive flow and cold shooting really was a big problem. The Bulldogs had some of the same problems and the opportunity was there for PC to pull away. But it was the Bulldogs with a 17 point second quarter that pulled away.
The third quarter was slow for both teams with Pella Christian holding a 7-6 edge. Both teams began to heat up in the final eight minutes as the ball began to find the net.
Still it was Van Meter that had a 19-16 advantage. The three point basket became a factor. The Eagles had only two long balls in the first half, but they unloaded six long bombs in the second half. It would not be enough, however, as the Bulldogs salted away a 49-40 victory.
“The 23 percent shooting will not win many ball games,” Pella Christian Coach Brad Engbers said. “We have to get it going offensively. Our discipline was poor tonight, our shooting was poor until late in the game and foul trouble really hurt us.”
Chloe Morgan led the Eagles with 13 points which included three treys. Avery Baugh was next in line with nine points, all coming from behind the arc.
Baugh also added five rebounds, two steals and two assists to her line. Allison Van Gorp checked in with seven points and 12 rebounds and Kara Van Wyk pulled down five rebounds.
Van Meter was led by Natalie Barth with 15 points and Clair Lauterbach with 11 points.
